Thoughts on the Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup was this last weekend, and once again the Euros won the cup. For most people its starting to feel like the situation the US basketball team was in when a few years ago when they hired Coach K to come in and right the ship. Personally I feel that we are well beyond that point. I'm not usually a trash everything and start over type of person, but after watching for the last 10 plus years its time for some drastic change, personnel and non-personnel wise.
To begin I'm going to an old adage, look good, play good. Simple right? Apparently not if you play for the US Ryder Cup team. For years they have endured looking like buffoons on the golf course on an international stage. Contrast them to the clean cut and fashionable European wardrobe and its hard to believe that we keep doing the same thing. Time to fire who ever is coming up with these horrid designs and hire a complete new team.
Next its time to change how players are selected, this year was a great example of how a player got hot the end of the year, arguable the golfer on the biggest hot streak next to that of Rory McIlroy and was left off the team as another player who wasn't playing well was taken as a captain's choice. Those players being Billy Horschel and Webb Simpson. Check the highlight reel from this weekend and what you will see is a lot of Euro's making lots of putts with lots of fist pumps following each of those made putts. Time to put a premium on putting, the old adage "drive for show putt for dough" is not wrong at all. Did we play well enough up to the greens to win this, yes, but when we got to the green and we were given opportunities to make putts we didn't.
We need players with fire in their belly's, not apathetic players. Take a look at the Euro team, all of which were extremely passionate about playing, where as some American's didn't look like they wanted to be there at all. The biggest disappointment for me this year was Bubba Watson, Bubba is usually a fiery guy, and maybe this is our fault because we as fans get on him about being who he is. He was a doormat this weekend, not really showing any fire, which is something the US team could have used.
Its time to do away with just cause you had a good year means you should be on the Ryder Cup team. Just cause you are one of the best golfers in the world doesn't guarantee that you play well in the format that the Ryder Cup presents. The afore mentioned Watson is a good case study in this. Yes it was a tough year for the US not having Tiger, Dustin Johnson (can you please get yourself together, you're about to be a dad) and Jason Duffner who had a bad back, but we have to do better in our choices and pairings as well.
The European's have no fear when it comes to any of our players, as they shouldn't cause we haven't shown them a reason to in the last couple times. I don't know who would make the best captain for next year, but I have an idea. Let the players choose. Hard for anyone but them to know who they will follow when the time comes. This year didn't work out well as there was infighting between captain Tom Watson and Phil Mickelson (Maybe more than Phil too).
It is time to fix the US Ryder Cup process and team and we are on the clock!
