Time To Take Cupcakes Off The Menu

Cupcake games, they happened every year in college football. They usually guarantee a blow out victory to start the season. Big high ranked Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams bring in little Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) schools and pay them to get beat down. I’m against these games being scheduled and think that the big conferences should move away from allowing these games.

I don’t like cupcake games because it makes for terrible football games. While I’m a fan of a good blowout, blowouts aren’t created equal. I’m perfectly fine with blowing out conference rivals or teams from other FBS conferences, but cupcake games are different. These cupcake games are usually over by the first quarter. This makes the rest of the game almost completely worthless to watch. Now as a fan of the Oregon Ducks and Madden it may seem weird that I’m against these games that bring Madden like beat downs to life, but if you have ever been to one, you know that at halftime half the fans in attendance leave the game. Secondly it’s hard to match apples to apples for teams with cupcakes on the schedule comparing them with teams that play full schedules without cupcake games.

Now it may seem ironic that I write this after 8 FCS teams beat FBS teams that paid them a combined $2.625 Million to play. Despite those wins which I received a lot of enjoyment from. I especially received enjoyment from the Eastern Washington Eagles, which is located about 20 miles outside of Spokane, my hometown, going into Reser Stadium in Corvallis and beating the Beavers in an exciting game. Even with the Appalachian St’s, the North Dakota St’s and Eastern Washington’s taking it to the big boys, the majority of these games end the way the Oregon Nicholls St game 66-3. Historically the FBS has had at worst a 73.3% winning ratio, those years being 2000 and 2013 (according to The Big Lead).

Overall the games are mostly snoozers and forgettable games. So its my opinion that we should get rid of cupcake games.
