Boundaries, They Aren't All Bad

Boundaries, the word carries a negative connotation when people usually talk about them. They are seen as a bad thing, something only used during breakups or divorces. It seems that few people talk about the positives and advantages of having boundaries. Right now I’m in what I consider a learning situation, I did or didn’t do a few things and this caused me to push away a person I love and deeply care about.  One thing I didn’t do is set some boundaries and breakdown another one.

The Catch-22

The Catch-22

There are few things I love more than football season. For two days every weekend from September to January I can be in front of a TV or at a stadium and there are few places I’d rather be in the world. While soccer may be the most popular sport in the world, football is king in America. Every season is enthralling for different reasons with many pieces making the tapestry of the game breathe taking. While there are derivatives to the game that I greatly enjoy I will stick with the game of football itself. From rookies or freshman making unexpected splashes to wiley veterans showing that they still have it the seasons never lack interesting stories.

A Confusing Journey

A Confusing Journey

One of the biggest stories in the NBA right now is Doc Rivers leaving the Boston Celtics to coach the Los Angeles Clippers. Not much has been made about how he left, in fact most are giving him a pass except ESPN’s Bill Simmons, a die hard Celtics fan and oddly enough a Clippers season ticket holder. Like many fans, Simmons thinks that Rivers quit on the Celtics rather than face a rebuilding phase, he still had three years left of a five-year contract he signed two years ago.

Respect, Or The Lack Thereof

Respect, Or The Lack Thereof

"I will never respect this Heat Championship", "I don't care if LeBron won another championship, I will never respect him"  "The Heat bought this championship"

These are a sample of the what I saw all over Twitter and Facebook last night. I've never been someone who has "hated" random players for perceived slights, I've always found inherently good things about most players and disliked some teams because they were rivals of my favorite teams. Those teams were few in number, that number being one. St. Mary's Gaels, this is the only team I hate. I dislike the way they play, the way they act, frankly sometimes I wish they didn't exist (Spoiler, this may have to change if Devyn Galland transfers to play for the Women's team next year). I'm the type of person who still recognizes greatness, no matter if its LeBron who I like playing well or Matthew Dellavedova who I greatly dislike.

On The Brink

On The Brink

When I was a little kid I came to the conclusion that as a dedicated sports fan you had be loyal to the teams closet to you geographically unless you moved somewhere else after already being a fan of different teams. So as of that day I became a fan of the Seattle Mariners, the Seattle Sonics, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The latter was hard for me as my favorite college basketball player was Washington State star Isaac Fontaine, but I had made my mind up and I stuck with it. It was hard at first being rooting for the Zags; they weren’t very good for the first couple years. My dad tried to explain to me that I could like any team I wanted no matter of geography, but I wouldn’t have any of it, I was stubborn.

Rediscovering The Spark

Sitting at the Starbucks in Albany, Oregon there are a hundred things going through my head. Most of them don't stick around long enough to be worth of a mention as I sip my coffee and watch people walk in and out of the door. I have sat here for two hours trying to figure out what to write about. I've searched Twitter for anything interesting, looked scores and talked on the phone but nothing. As boredom sets in I randomly look through my browser history. As I look I see pages and a think about what is on each one, then it hits me and I know what to write about.

Starting

Starting is always the hardest part. No matter what it is, writing, working out, or making any change to your life. Talk is easy, talk is cheap, talk is not action, talk is excuse. Starting is hard, it is action, it takes testicular fortitude. Starting means putting your foot down, drawing a line in the sand and refusing to go backwards. Starting isn’t for everyone; it involves a lot of change, change in how you approach life, work, free time and your goals in life.
